How to pair to a Wireless USB Receiver

My Steam Controller makes a loud/funny noise

To globally disable Haptics and the Experimental Rumble Emulation for the Steam Controller, follow these steps:

If you’re no longer experiencing sound or haptics:

Steam button lights up but doesn’t control anything

Your Steam Controller may be paired to a different device (another computer or Steam Link). Plug your Wireless USB Receiver into the desired device and do the following to pair to a different source:

My Steam Controller doesn’t work as expected in a game

You may experience functionality loss or unintended input if the Steam Overlay isn’t working properly or the configuration you’ve chosen includes input styles that aren’t supported by the game you’re playing.

1. Check Steam Overlay functionality

The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality. Press the Steam button on your controller, or ALT+TAB on your keyboard to bring up the overlay. If the Steam Overlay doesn’t appear, make sure you’ve enabled it through the Steam settings menu.

2. Launch the game from Steam

Steam may have issues applying the Steam Overlay to non-Steam or retail games. Please try adding retail or non-Steam games to your Steam library. Once the game is added, launch the game from your Steam library

3. Disable game launcher overlays

Some games use a separate launcher outside of Steam (Uplay, Origin, Bethesda, Square-Enix, etc.). These games may have overlays that interfere with the Steam Overlay. To disable these overlays:

4. Change your controller configuration

To create your own configuration:

You can build from the Keyboard (WASD) Mouse configuration for keyboard/mouse input, and Gamepad listed under the Template section to avoid using hybridized input that some games may not accept.

Note: Rename the binding to be easily located. It is listed in your Templates section. Make any input modifications that you need and export/save the configuration.

5. Disable input emulators and streaming software

If you have an Xinput emulator (Joy2Key), any type of input management software (Razer Synapse, Logitech), screen capturing software (NVIDIA ShadowPlay), a framerate counter program, or others installed on your computer, it may conflict with the Steam Controller. Try disabling these programs and retest the issue.

How to use the Steam Controller with non-Steam games

You’ll need to add the game and/or launcher to your Steam Library:

Make sure to enable your Steam Overlay globally in the Steam client Settings:

If your third-party client has an Overlay, disable it to make sure it doesn’t conflict with the Steam Overlay.

Phantom input

If you’re experiencing random input or drifting trackpads, you may need to calibrate your Steam Controller.

Problems using multiple controllers

The Steam Controller uses XInput to send commands to your computer. When you’re using multiple controllers, games will prioritize some controllers over others depending on their input style, DirectInput or XInput. However, you can try to isolate the input devices to determine if one is causing an interference.

To isolate input devices:

To ensure that your devices are using different configurations:

Note: You can also change the controller order from Big Picture mode > Library > Manage Game > Controller Options.

I can’t save my configuration

Do the following to register your Steam Controller:

Can I recharge batteries in my Steam Controller?

The Steam Controller accepts disposable and rechargeable batteries. The USB cable is intended to provide a wired connection and does not charge any batteries inserted into the Controller.

To use rechargeable batteries, they will need to be charged with the appropriate device.

There are other annoying problems also, and not just in Rocket League.

I know it’s not a problem with the controller itself, because when I use DS4Windows to emulate a 360 pad, the problems go away. So it’s something screwy with Steam.

I’ve already tried resetting the Rocket League controller configuration to default, but that didn’t fix it.

I haven’t heard of that issue before. You can try posting your config to troubleshoot what settings need fixing or you can just opt-out of controller configuration entirely. You can opt-out of Ps4 controller support in big picture under the controller settings page.

Well I don’t really want to opt out. I was using DS4Windows for a long time but that program has many problems of its own. Steam’s DS4 support is better overall, even with the issues.

Right now I just want to reset all my Steam controller data. I’m sure there is a way to do it; I’ll figure it out eventually.

For the DPad the only thing I can think of is if the deadzone settings are set strangely. Unfortunately right now Dpad on the DS4 is implemented as an emulated joystick so it can be somewhat confusing to set up.

Lucky you, I happen to know where all the profiles are saved

if its not that exact folder it’ll be in userdata and then a few subfolders like shown above

what mine looks like. Controller config is where the individual game configs are stored.

from here you can ‘purge’ all data however I’m not sure if this’ll actually clear it or not, but this is worth a try. Just remember to back them all up first.

but again, I’m not sure if this will actually clear the problems up. So alternatively, you can opt in/out of steam beta and see how that changes things

I have almost same problem you have and l am not able to find reset the configurations of controller.

In my case is occured using xinput controller not a xb. When I try to regist my controller, steam ask something to me such as mapping infomation of my xinput controller. I put random botton or skip for all mapping. After that controller was not working normally but repeating down.

I tried to remove personal setting and delete related files I found from other discussions but it wasnt working.

yeah not working for me either. i want to COMPLETELY ELIMINATE ALL INTERFERENCE FROM STEAM WITH MY CONTROLLERS. i dont want steam to deal with intercepting input from my controllers, ever, at all, period.

and ‘opting out’ of the configuration in the settings DOES NOT work. it still intercepts input, still goofs up controls in some games. its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ infuriating.

THIS! I had a similar problem and with the combination of this post and what I had figured out so far a was able to delete e reconfigure my GENERIC controller. I am not sure but it may work for the Steam controler.

You may delete configurations and preferences from ALL your controllers.

Steam VR Troubleshooting

Steam VR + HTC Vive Troubleshooting

Welcome to the troubleshooting guide for the HTC Vive + Steam VR. Troubleshooting for the first generation development kit can be found here.

If you have a Vive Pre Developer kit, the troubleshooting instructions below will also apply to you. The only difference is the Vive Pre uses white LEDs instead of green LEDs to signify that a device is ready to be used.

For a guided troubleshooting experience, please visit the SteamVR help site.

General PC Troubleshooting

Please ensure that you have optimized your PC Settings for SteamVR by completing the following steps:

Static Electricity

Some things to try if this happens regularly:

If you are experiencing issues with the Headset, please see the topics below for troubleshooting suggestions:

Error 108 (Headset not found)

This error may be a USB driver issue. Please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Reboot your headset:

Power cycle your Link Box:

Restart your computer (Quit Steam VR before shutting down your PC)

Plug your Link Box into a different USB port on your PC:

Error 109 / Error 400

You may see one of these errors if you are not connected to your machine’s dedicated graphics card.

Please make sure that both the Vive’s link box and your primary display are connected to the same GPU. If you are using a laptop, make sure that you are connected to the machine’s discrete GPU. You may need to set your machine to «prefer maximum performance.»

Additionally, if you have multiple graphics cards in a desktop PC, make sure that the Vive and your primary display are connected to the same card. Some users have reported that connecting their primary monitor over DVI causes issues next to the Vive. Try using a display port or HDMI connection.

Resetting USB Devices

As a last resort for headset detection issues, you can reset your SteamVR USB devices.

New USB PCI-Express Card

If you’ve tried all of the above and continue to have issues, your USB chipset may be at fault.

Our testing has shown that the Inateck 2-Port USB3.0 PCI-Express Card (Serial: KTU3FR-2O2I) works reliably with the HTC Vive and can overcome these kinds of USB issues.

Error 208 (HMD detected over USB, but monitor not found)

Error 208 is a generic HMD error message. This error can have a number of solutions, so please work from the list below to make sure you’ve attempted all available solutions:

Headset not detected

Headset LED States

Camera does not work

We’ve found that most users who are not able to use their cameras are running on preview builds of Windows 10 (Microsoft Insider program).

We’re not able to guarantee SteamVR related features will function correctly on early release builds. If you are running on a Windows Insider preview version post build 10586, please roll back to the current available consumer version.

If you are experiencing issues with the Controller, please see the topics below for troubleshooting suggestions:

Controller not connected

Controller Trackpad Issues

If your controller’s trackpad is twitchy and/or oversensitive, it needs to be calibrated.

Controller LED States

Base Stations

If you are experiencing issues with the Base Stations, please see the topics below for troubleshooting suggestions:

Base Station LED States

If both base station LEDs don’t turn green, something may be wrong.

Optical Sync

If your base stations aren’t working correctly, make sure they are properly set up for optical sync.

Cabled Sync

If your room makes it impossible for the bases to see each other (and the LED is purple), there is another way to sync.

Tracking Issues

Tracking issues commonly manifest as a drifting or floating movement. Open your Frame Timing graph (SteamVR > Settings > Performance > “Display Frame Timing”) and look for frame timing spikes. If you see spikes, the issue is most likely with CPU performance, and not with tracking.

If a device’s icon in SteamVR Status is pulsing green, it means it is not tracking. When in-headset the displays go grey when your headset loses tracking. Check the following if you are having tracking issues:

SteamVR Issues (Error 301)

If you are experiencing problems with missing or corrupt files in SteamVR or you are encountering an Error 301, make sure the SteamVR tool is correctly installed by verifying the tool cache.

If that doesn’t work, try deleting the local files. Follow steps 1-3 from above and select «Delete Local Tool Content.» Double click SteamVR in the tools library to reinstall.

Remove or Disable Conflicting Software

Some software has been found to conflict with SteamVR or SteamVR driver installations. If you have any of the following software installed, try uninstalling it and re-testing:
